Basic Computing Package

All eligible members of the U-M Ann Arbor campus receive the services included in the Basic Computing Package at no charge.

Those eligible to receive the package include all Ann Arbor U-M students who are listed by their department as "Active in Program," all faculty (including emeritus faculty), and all full-time or part-time staff with a regular (that is, not temporary) appointment. Questions about eligibility can be directed to the ITCS Accounts Office.

The Basic Computing Package includes:

  • Uniqname and UMICH password

  • E-mail (with up to 2 gigabytes of storage for messages)

  • Personal file storage with daily backup [IFS] (10 gigabytes; more can be purchased)

  • Laser printing (black and white) in the Campus Computing Sites and University Libraries (400 pages per term* for students, 50 pages per term for faculty and staff)

  • Login Service (access to Unix systems for general purpose computing)

  • Statistics and Computation Service (access to Unix systems for computationally intensive or long-running programs)

  • U-M Online Directory

  • Help Desk (764-HELP, online.consulting@umich.edu) assistance on the services included in the Basic Computing Package

For users whose needs exceed the amount of service provided in the Basic Computing Package, additional quantities of some services can be purchased.
