Computing Sites: Duderstadt Center

Location

The Duderstadt Center (formerly the Media Union) computing site is located in the James and Anne Duderstadt Center (formerly the Media Union) Building on North Campus.

Workstations in the Duderstadt Center are administered and maintained by Computer Aided Engineering Network (CAEN). The workstations are available to students and faculty from the entire University. ITCS Campus Computing Sites maintains the printers in the Duderstadt Center.

Over 500 workstations are in place within the Duderstadt Center including Mac OS, Windows and Unix workstations. Most of these are in open areas for easy access. All U-M students, faculty, and staff can now also bring their portable computers and connect to the Internet via public ethernet jacks.

64-SITES: If the Duderstadt Center's Printers are in need of maintenance, call 64-SITES (Option #1) to report the problem, and a staff member of the Sites Environment Support Team will be sent to troubleshoot the problem or restock the Site.

Special Features

Within the Duderstadt Center is housed:
  • traditional and digital libraries;
  • computer training rooms;
  • an advanced visualization laboratory;
  • a virtual reality laboratory;
  • video and audio performance studios;
  • design lab space for special projects;
  • an exhibition gallery;
  • a teleconference suite; and
  • over 500 workstations in open areas.

Wireless Network: Wireless connectivity is available within the entire Duderstadt Center building. The Duderstadt Center wireless network is available for authorized use by all students, faculty and staff of the University of Michigan. A valid uniqname and password is required to access network resources off the wireless network. Adaptive Technology ErgoPod: One ErgoPod station is located on the 2nd floor (main level) of the Duderstadt Center. The basis of the ergopod is an Ergoquest model 500 sit-stand-recline workstation. This workstation is designed to accommodate sitting and standing users as well as all types of wheelchairs. This platform was modified to include 2 CPUs (Mac and PC), closed circuit TV system, scanner, and flat panel attached to a monitor arm. A KVM switch is used to switch between the Mac and PC. Software is acquired from a special loadset supported by Campus Computing Sites and includes JAWS, Magic, Kurzweil 3000, and Dragon Naturally Speaking for the PC and Ilisten for the Mac.

Color Printing: Color printing is available at the Duderstadt Center. The color printers are available for use by all current UM Students, Faculty & Staff. Color printing is not included in the Basic Computing Package, and the cost per page will be $0.40 which will be billed to student or departmental accounts. Tabloid Printer: Tabloid (11x17) printing is available at the Duderstadt Center. The printers are available for all Faculty, Students, and Staff to use during normal operating hours. Tabloid printouts are counted as two pages per side. More information on color printing in Sites is available.
