The gateway machines find the appropriate delivery address for each piece of mail by checking the U-M Online Directory for the recipient's forwarding address.

Filtering and Blocking Done at the Gateway

• Blocking based on bad behavior by the sending host
• PenaltyBox generates temp failures for mail suspected to be spam
• Virus filtering
• Opt-in spam blocking (done only for users who have opted in to the Do Not Spam List)
