Directory Services

  • U-M Online Directory
Each member of the U-M community has an entry in the U-M Online Directory. You can also create mail groups in the directory. U-M IT staff can request additional directory access if it is needed for their work. For more about the directory, see the U-M Online Directory FAQ.
  • Directory Group Clean-Up and Expiry Project
This project is working on cleaning up obsolete group data in the U-M Online Directory. The primary means for doing this is a Group Expiry Policy.
  • Active Directory
Centrally maintained Windows/Active Directory accounts are placed in the forest root domain, UMROOT. The UMROOT domain is provisioned with user objects derived from corresponding entries in the U-M Online Directory.
  • eDirectory
Novell eDirectory is a cross-platform Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)-enabled, directory-based identity management system that centralizes the management of user identities, access privileges, and many other network resources. The main eDirectory on campus is the Michigan Tree.
  • Enterprise Directory
The Enterprise Directory project was launched via the ITCommons to create a visionary architecture and plan for identity management, roles, data sharing and reconciliation, and directory services that reach far beyond the current system and organization constraints. This is a joint project of ITCS and MAIS. As of early 2007, project members are working on implementation.
