Ask a Consultant

Walk-in Consulting

Consultants at the Angell Hall Courtyard and School of Education Computing Sites can answer Basic Computing Package (BCP) (listed below) and Sites-related computing questions to help you work more effectively in the Sites computing environment.

Another good place to turn for walk-in assistance is the U-M Computer Showcase (lower level, Michigan Union). In addition to sales consulting, Showcase staff can help with questions pertaining to software configuration, Windows and Mac OS trouble-shooting, and more. If they can't answer your question, they can most likely find you someone who can! The Showcase also performs software and hardware upgrades for a fee.

Telephone Consulting

If you're working at home, in an office, or in a Computing Site where a consultant is not available — and you need help with accessing or using any of the items listed below, dial 764-HELP (on campus, dial 4-4357).

This telephone help line is staffed by consultants who can answer a wide variety of Basic Computing Package questions. They can also direct you to additional information about the Campus Computing Sites, computing workshops, documentation, and computer sales. Occasionally, your question may be referred to an expert consultant if the staff at 764-HELP can't answer it. See the 764-HELP page for hours of operation and what to know before calling.

When you call 4-HELP, you will first be greeted by a recording that informs you of any current system outages, such as malfunctioning dial-in or e-mail servers. After listening to the message you may choose from one of seven options.

Online Consulting

Online consulting is another option that allows you to pose questions regarding the Basic Computing Package and receive assistance through electronic mail. Simply send e-mail describing your problem to online.consulting@umich.edu, and a consultant will answer your question online.

Sales Consulting

Thinking about buying a computer or printer? Wondering about what software package is right for you? Consultants at the U-M Computer Showcase can help. The Showcase, located on the ground level of the Michigan Union, has demonstration equipment and product information sheets.
