How do I remove myself from a directory group?

  1. Contact the group owner(s) and ask to be removed from the group. You can contact the owner(s) of a group by sending e-mail to

    groupname-owners@umich.edu

where you have substituted the name of the group for groupname. For example, to contact the owners of a group named no.such.group, you would send mail to no.such.group-owners@umich.edu.

  2. If you get no response from the group owner(s), contact the directory administrators (diradmin@umich.edu).

Many people have asked that they be allowed to remove themselves from directory groups rather than having to ask the group owner(s) to do this. We understand that it is very frustrating not to be able to get out of groups easily and quickly on your own.

In the current directory, there is no way to distinguish between official groups for University business and other groups. A number of people in University leadership positions have stated that it is important that people not be allowed to remove themselves from official groups that are used for University business, such as departmental staff lists.

Work has begun on MCommunity, a new directory that will allow for different types of groups. It will have a mechanism for defining official University groups so that other groups can be set to allow members to remove themselves.

A NOTE ABOUT JOINABLE GROUPS: If a group in the directory has been set up as "joinable" by the owner, you can remove yourself from it by resigning. Bind to the directory, search for the group, then click the Resign button. If the group does not have a Resign button, then it is not a joinable group.
