About Information Technology Central Services (ITCS)

General Information

IT Central Services provides high-quality information technology services that help UM faculty, students, and staff excel at teaching, learning, research, and administration. Most of the ITCS staff is located at the Arbor Lakes complex.

IT Central Services is made up of three core groups:

IT Communications Services (ITCom)

Andy Palms, Director

ITCom is responsible for telephone/voice service to the campus (including IP telephony), wired and wireless data network operation and maintenance, Internet access, video services, LAN/NOS Groupware Services, and the Network operations Center (NOC). ITCom is involved in most campus construction projects in planning and implementing voice and data networks.

U-M Computing Environment (UMCE)

The UMCE is responsible for core academic and infrastructure computing services, such as: directory services, authentication and authorization, email and postmaster, login and statistics servers, and Domain Name Service (DNS). UMCE is the webmaster for the U-M gateway website and provides an array of web services including hosting websites, web-based authentication, and database hosting for the web.

User Services

User Services includes: the Accounts Office, where account management is handled; 4-HELP, a hotline for IT assistance; the Computer Showcase, the U-M computer store; and Campus Computing Sites, the many locations managed solely or jointly by ITCS for student and faculty use of hardware and software on campus. User Services staff negotiate software licenses and distribute software; produce the Blue Disc, with campus software and set-up information; manage charged-for printing in the campus computing sites, libraries, and labs across campus; and, reserve computer classrooms.

The User Advocate group is the contact for ITCS systems security issues and for managing the responsible use of IT resources on campus, as well as for providing anti-virus services (Virus Busters) and the Lyris listserv service. Education Services—a user support service, but not part of User Services—provides workshops on a variety of IT tools and systems for faculty, staff, and students.

Accounts Office

The ITCS Accounts Office can assist with computing accounts, subscriptions, uniqnames, passwords, and billing inquiries regarding ITCS services (including U-M Online).

Campus Computing Sites

Campus Computing Sites provides computers, software, and printers for use by U-M students, faculty, and staff.

Computer Classroom Reservations

Instructional staff may reserve a computing classroom on either a one-time or semester basis. The classrooms vary by size, location, and other attributes.

Computing Workshops

ITCS offers workshops and other educational programs, including free, online tutorials. The Workshops page lists course descriptions, schedules, and prices.

Consulting

ITCS offers several different types of consulting assistance:

  • The Online Help Guide is ITCS's Web-based resource center—check it out!

  • For questions about how to use core U-M computing services, call 4-HELP (764-4357) or send e-mail to online.consulting@umich.edu.

  • Sites Consultants can assist with questions about working in the ITCS Campus Computing Sites. They are on duty during all open hours at the Angell Hall Computing Site and at the School of Education Computing Site.
